the lives of persons affected by mental illness. Individuals with these biological disorders, their families
and friends, mental health professionals, and the broader
community can all benefit from the organization’s
mission:NAMI Washtenaw County
is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, and a local affiliate
of the national NAMI and NAMI Michigan. Our mission is to:
Support: people affected by mental illness
Eradicate:discrimination and stigma associated with mental illness
Educate:the community about mental illness and available resources
Advocate for insurance parity, optimal treatment, rehabilitation services, desirable living situations and meaningful work for all individuals coping with mental illness.

National Alliance on Mental Illness of Washtenaw County (NAMIWC) Presents a Special Screening of “A Sister’s Call” with Appearance by Director and Executive Producer, Rebecca Schaper.
In 1977, Call Richmond disappeared. 20 Years later, his sister, Rebecca Schaper, found him homeless, alone, and suffering from severe paranoid schizophrenia. Filmed over fourteen years, “A Sister’s Call” follows Rebecca's journey to "bring her brother back" from the depths of his homelessness and his schizophrenia. Through helping Call, Rebecca and her family confront the issues of their dark past and attempt to overcome the complicated family dynamic that comes with living in support of someone you love and who has a serious brain illness.

Join NAMIWC in hosting a special screening of “A Sister’s Call” followed by a conversation with Director and Executive Producer, Rebecca Schaper, at the University Of Michigan Depression Center Auditorium on May 20th. Reception at 5:P.M. Introduction by Gregory W. Dalack, MD, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and showing at 6 P.M. Discussion with Rebecca Schaper immediately to follow.

May 14th: Recovery Oriented System of Care
The Washtenaw Community Health Organization (WCHO) has moved to a Recovery Oriented System of Care (ROSC) for the delivery of Substance Abuse Treatment Services. Representatives from the Substance Abuse Coordinating Agency will present at the May Program Meeting about access to and the delivery of substance use disorder services in Washtenaw County.
NAMI WASHTENAW will sponsor a new course this year entitled, "NAMI BASICS". This course is specifically tailored to meet the needs of parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents with a mental illness. This course will include an overview on working with the public school system to get your child the accommodations they may need. The 6 week series of classes will begin on Tuesday, June 5, from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at a location to be announced soon. Registration is required, but the course if free of charge.
